When you have learned compassion for yourself, compassion for others is automatic. – Henepola Gunaratana
We often meet with people, who complain about others, but they never look into themselves; often when you see problems in others, it is the reason that your mind is not at peace. Happier inner being and a soul with full bliss never look for problems he/she find the solution and the ways he/she would be happy. First, we need to change ourselves; then we can see the world-changing along with us.
The you that goes in one side of the meditation experience is not the same you that comes out the other side. – Henepola Gunaratana
Meditation is not a miracle; it is a process and a result of your daily good deeds. However, a miracle could be possible through meditation, but it quite depends on the person himself. If you want to find happiness by getting rid of a bad memory, then meditation can do that for you. So, it means it is a miracle for you. Furthermore, if you are struggling with memorizing your studies, then meditation can help you with that; so again it is a miracle for you.
You can learn not to want what you want, to recognize desires but not be controlled by them. – Henepola Gunaratana
Desires are the base of our unhappiness. We wish a lot of things in our life, starting from our childhood to our late lives; desire never disappears from our life; it is constantly present with us. A happy soul and wise being mean to identify them whether it is right or wrong for you. The desire to criticize brings pain later; in the same way, the desire to stick with memories brings unhappiness. All these are part of your desire; past is also a desire as you wish to find happiness through it.
No matter how hard you pursue pleasure and success, there are times when you fail. No matter how fast you flee, there are times when pain catches up with you. – Henepola Gunaratana
Success doesn’t define you as happy. Happiness is a genuinely different concept from being successful. Happiness is a state of mind, and it is nature’s miracle; a milliner finds himself unhappy when he isn’t able to conclude a good business deal, but in the opposite way a homeless person finds himself happy even without a roof above him.
Watch the functioning of your own mind in a calm and detached manner so you can gain insight into your own behavior. – Henepola Gunaratana
Set yourself accountable for your actions; don’t try to accept that whatever you do is right, and it doesn’t affect anyone apart from you. Actions are invariable; once it has done, there is no way to get it back. The mind is like water if you throw a stone into it; it will reflect but once you chose to neglect it; it remains calm and peaceful all the way.
The process of becoming who you will be begins first with the total acceptance of who you are. – Henepola Gunaratana
The purpose of acceptance is to watch yourself as a complete self; your whole temper will bring your complete happiness. Accept the way you are; if you lack love in your life, then accept it; do works that help others; care for them and work for them; good deeds and selfless work bring happiness and love to life. Good work, good work, and good work are the only solution to your every problem.
Peace is not a thought, not a concept; it is a nonverbal experience. – Henepola Gunaratana
Have you ever considered spending time with a person who has lost everything in their life, but still maintains a smile on their face? Do you have ever wondered why? Because they reach a spot in their life where they know; life is a dramatic place; wherein one place it seems happy on the other hand it becomes sad; nothing remains in the same way. Change is a constant process, whether we accept it or not the day will fall into night and night will turn into day.
Don’t cling to anything and don’t reject anything. – Henepola Gunaratana
How to become a real learner; by accepting everything at the first phase but remain in doubt. Learning never ends in life; every day is a lesson; if you have completed your journey, then there is no reason for you to live in this world. If you are living it means you still need to learn something; there is something that you still lack; something that you have not experienced yet. Never allow your ego to become a barrier in front of your displace Mind. Be a learner for your whole life.
No problem. You are not crazier than you were yesterday. It has always been this way, and you just never noticed. – Henepola Gunaratana
Sometimes we find ourselves lost in this world; we feel the disconnect that allows us to connect ourselves to our higher self. Then we realize how many mistakes we had done in our past, and we mourn with regrets. We wish to change; we want to find happiness. Remember never to allow that go away; grab it withhold and change your day one by one. Once flood passed, away it takes time for a city to get settled down.
You can only have bliss if you don’t chase it. – Henepola Gunaratana
Have faith in yourself and give your best throughout your life but never chase for happiness. Once you wish to chase happiness, you will lose it. It’s like ordering someone to stop thinking about an elephant. Do your work; fulfill your life’s purpose; live with your values; contribute to the society and create a legacy for yourself.
